Anti-anxiety drugs are mainly prescribed to people suffering from anxiety disorders. However, they also find use in treating eating disorders, obsessive compulsive behavior, smoking cessation, depression, menstrual cramps and several other hormone related disorders. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, dopamine antagonists, and lithium are among some of the most commonly used anti-anxiety medications. Anti-anxiety drugs and sexual dysfunction Anti-anxiety drugs cause sexual dysfunction mainly owing to the blockage of chemical signals that are relayed by the brain. The blockage of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and serotonin renders the nerve cells useless to transmit neural messages. In reality, the causes of anxiety disorders are still somewhat hazy. Although there are many factors contributing to the onset of anxiety disorders, it is still a mystery as to why it happens. There is also no clear-cut explanation as to how it affects the neural pathways and affects the sexual desires. Therefore, researches are not very open about what affect anti-anxiety can affect the libido. For now, all we know is that antidepressants have been reportedly known to cause a significant reduction in libido. This may be accountable to the major hormonal changes that are influenced by the drugs, mainly the serotonin and dopamine levels.
Anti-anxiety medications have been known to cause sexual side effects on almost all who have taken the drugs and in some cases, the side effects are extreme. Reports have indicated that anywhere from 0 to 70 percent of the people taking antidepressants were known to have reduced sexual drive and impotence. The side effects can manifest themselves in several forms. Difficulty in getting turned on and achieving orgasms are among the common and no so severe side effects. In the worse cases, they can cause long-term erectile dysfunction in men and decreased sensation in women accompanied by dryness or reduced secretion of vaginal fluid. Almost all of the commonly used anti-anxiety medications have been known to cause sexual disorders. For e.g., SSRI causes several sexual challenges, TCAs are also known to cause sexual side effects, others that decrease dopamine levels are also associated with reduced sexual drive. The worst thing is that anti-anxiety medications not only affect the sexual drive but also cause psychological changes. It has been found that people who are on a constant intake of SSRI and TCA felt disconnection and alienation from their partners and felt weaker attraction. The medications have almost the same effect on both men and women. What can you do about it? The best thing is to sort it out with your physician and see if you can substitute your therapy with methods that do not require the intake of these drugs, but are equally effective in solving your problems. You can also see if you can switch your medication with others that do not affect the libido or cause sexual dysfunction. Since most people taking antidepressants opt out of it simply due to the way it affects libido, so it is important to get the right help as soon as you can.
